Anniversary cards are a funny one. You’ve presumably already said the big romantic things out loud plenty of times, so writing them down again can feel a bit like repeating yourself. But there’s something about seeing it written that still lands differently. Here’s what I’d actually write, depending on who it’s for.

For Your Partner

  • “Happy anniversary. I’d choose you again, every single time.”
  • “Another year with you and I still can’t believe my luck. Happy anniversary, I love you.”
  • “Thank you for another year of being exactly the person I want to come home to. Happy anniversary.”
  • “I love the life we’ve built together, even the messy, ordinary bits. Happy anniversary.”
  • “Here’s to us, and to another year of figuring it out together. I love you more than I did last year, which is saying something.”

Funny Anniversary Messages

  • “Happy anniversary to the person who still hasn’t returned me for a refund. Thank you for that.”
  • “Another year of you putting up with my nonsense. Happy anniversary, you absolute saint.”
  • “Happy anniversary! Here’s to arguing about what to watch for another year.”
  • “We’re basically an old married couple at this point, and I mean that as a massive compliment. Happy anniversary.”

For Your Parents

  • “Happy anniversary to two of my absolute favourite people. Your marriage has taught me so much about what love actually looks like.”
  • “Watching the two of you together has always shown me what a proper partnership looks like. Happy anniversary, I love you both.”
  • “Happy anniversary! Thank you for showing me what it looks like to choose someone, again and again, year after year.”

For a Friend or Family Member’s Anniversary

  • “Happy anniversary to two people who deserve every bit of happiness they’ve found together.”
  • “So happy for you both on your anniversary. Here’s to many more years of the same.”
  • “Happy anniversary! Watching your relationship over the years has been genuinely lovely.”

Milestone Anniversaries

For the big ones, ten, twenty five, fifty years, it’s worth actually marking the number.

  • “Happy 10th anniversary! A whole decade of choosing each other, and I hope there are many more to come.”
  • “Happy 25th anniversary. A quarter of a century together, and you’re still as brilliant a match as ever.”
  • “Happy 50th anniversary! Fifty years is proper proof that real love lasts. So happy for you both.”

Short and Simple Wishes

  • “Happy anniversary, with love.”
  • “Happy anniversary to you both.”
  • “Wishing you a wonderful anniversary.”
  • “Happy anniversary! Here’s to many more.”

What Not to Write

I’d avoid jokes about divorce statistics or how long a relationship “usually” lasts, even meant kindly they can land oddly. And for a couple who’ve had a difficult year, a simple “happy anniversary, thinking of you both” is often better than something overly grand.

Making Your Card More Meaningful

An anniversary card tends to get kept somewhere special, so a hand-painted one feels right for it. You can browse mine at A Little Painted Hello.

Questions People Ask Me About This

What do I write for my own partner if we’re not big on grand gestures? Keep it honest rather than dramatic. “Happy anniversary, I love our ordinary life together” often means more than anything elaborate.

Is it okay to be funny in an anniversary card? Absolutely, if that’s how your relationship works. Genuine and funny beats polished and generic every time.

What if I don’t know their exact number of years? A general “happy anniversary” works fine, you don’t need the exact number to make it meaningful.
