There’s a particular kind of gift that stops people in their tracks. Not because it’s expensive, or because it came in impressive packaging, but because it’s clearly, unmistakably, made for them. Made for their specific life, their specific home, their specific story.

A handpainted house portrait is that gift.

I’ve just listed custom watercolour house portraits in my shop, and I wanted to write a proper post about them — what they are and why I love making them

How This Started

A quiet Saturday night and no real plan.

My husband was working, I had my paints out, and I decided on a whim to paint our house. Mo particular reason — I just thought, why not?

I loved how it came out. I posted it on Instagram, got so many lovely comments, and something clicked. If I loved painting my own home that much, maybe other people would love having theirs painted too.

So I painted a few more. The response was the same. And here we are.

I love that this listing came from something so unplanned. The best things often do.

What a House Portrait Actually Is

Every house portrait I paint starts with a photograph of your property. From that photo, I sketch the house by hand, build up the painting in layers of professional watercolour, and finish it with ink pen detail to sharpen the lines and bring the whole thing to life.

The result is an A4 original painting — not a print, not a digital illustration, not something generated by a computer. An actual painting, made with actual paint, by actual hands. One of a kind, because your house is one of a kind.

No two portraits look the same, because no two homes are the same.

What Makes Them Special

Here’s the thing about a house. It’s not just bricks and windows and a front door. It’s the first place you ever felt like a proper grown-up. It’s where you brought your baby home from the hospital. It’s the place you and your partner saved for, stretched for, finally got the keys to. It’s the house your parents lived in for forty years, where Christmas always smelled the same, and the hallway carpet never changed.

A photograph captures all of that to a degree. But a painting does something different. It’s slower. It’s considered. Someone has looked at your home carefully — really looked at it — and made something from it. That changes how it feels to look at.

I also love that I can add a little something extra if the property could use it. If you’d like me to paint in some hanging baskets, a climbing rose, a bit of wisteria, extra blooms in the garden — just let me know. Sometimes the house in the photograph isn’t quite how you picture it in your head, and a painting can fix that.

Who These Are Perfect For

New home gifts. This is probably the most obvious one, and for good reason. Moving into a new home is a huge moment, and most housewarming gifts — lovely as they are — don’t really mark it. A portrait of the actual house does. It says: this place matters, and so does this moment.

Wedding and anniversary gifts. Particularly if the couple has a home they love, or if you want to mark the home they’re starting together. It’s something they can hang on the wall for years.

Retirement gifts. If someone has worked in the same building for decades, or is finally moving to the house they always dreamed of, a portrait is a genuinely meaningful way to mark that.

Christmas gifts. A personal, original piece of art for someone who already has everything. It’s the kind of thing you can’t walk into a shop and buy for anyone — it’s only theirs.

For yourself. This one gets overlooked, but honestly — if you love your home, why not have it painted? You don’t need to wait for an occasion or for someone else to think of it. A portrait of your own home, hanging in your own hallway, is a lovely thing.

Leaving gifts and farewells. If someone is moving away from a home they’ve loved, or if you want to commemorate a place that holds a lot of history, a portrait captures it in a way that photographs alone don’t quite manage.

How It Works

It’s a straightforward process, and I’ve tried to make it as easy as possible.

Place your order through the Etsy listing, then send me a clear photo of your property via Etsy message. A straight-on shot in good natural light works best. Multiple photos from different angles are always welcome, and if you want to send me the address so I can have a look on Google Maps for extra reference, that’s helpful too.

Let me know at that point if you’d like any additions — extra greenery, flowers, hanging baskets, wisteria — and whether you’d prefer a portrait or landscape orientation.

Then I get to work. Your portrait will be painted and posted to you within a week, via Royal Mail.

It arrives unframed, and it’s A4, so standard frames are easy to find.

A Word on Materials

I paint with professional Winsor & Newton watercolours on proper watercolour paper.

A painting made with professional-grade materials on good paper is one that lasts. The colours stay true. The paper doesn’t buckle or yellow. It’s something you can frame and hang and still love in twenty years.

This is not a novelty gift. It’s a piece of art.

An Introductory Offer (For Now)

To celebrate the launch of this listing, the first three customers will receive their portrait at half price. I wanted to get a few portraits out into the world as this listing finds its feet.

The Bigger Picture

I’m sometimes asked why I don’t just offer prints, or work digitally, or use any of the tools that would make this faster, cheaper and more scalable.

The answer is simple: because that’s not what this is.

In a world that’s increasingly full of images generated in seconds by algorithms — and I want to be completely honest that I find the idea of AI-generated “art” being passed off as handmade genuinely troubling — I’m passionate about creating hand-painted pieces only. I may sell prints in the future, but for now, I’m sticking to selling original work only.

If you’d like to order a custom house portrait or find out more, you can find the listing here.

And if you’ve received a house portrait as a gift — or given one — I’d love to hear about it. What was the occasion? Did it mean as much to the person receiving it as you hoped? Let me know in the comments.
